Romantic Things to Do in Madrid

Madrid 5

Madrid is sometimes overlooked by travelers in favor of Barcelona, but there is more to this city than meets the eye. Here are some suggestions for all the romantics out there who are travelling to Spain’s capital:

1. Don’t be stingy! You want to have a good time in Madrid with your other half (or as they say in Spanish “con to media naranja”), so you might as well book a room in a lavish hotel. Luxury accommodations like those in Hotel Ritz Madrid have luxury packages for couples going on a romantic getaway, which include dinners for two and celebration gifts. Beauty and massage treatments are also the norm in luxury hotels, so don’t hesitate to go for a spa treatment or a couple massage.

2. Find a cozy café! Nothing screams romance more than a private table in a small and tasteful café. Pabellón del Espejo (Pavilion of Mirrors) is a romantic café in the art-deco style, which is very popular during Valentine’s Day. However, you don’t have to wait for that day to come in order to enjoy a nice glass of wine.

3. Plan a dinner for two! Romantic dinners are the staple of any romantic getaway, and Madrid has many restaurants you can check out. La Gallette 2 is known as one of the most romantic restaurants in the city (and with some famous fruit and cognac based desserts). The restaurant also doubles as a tea lounge by night, which goes under the name of “El gato persa” (The Persian Cat). Check Happy Cow for the most up to date vegetarian dining options.

4. Watch a flamenco performance! You can’t travel to Spain without attending an authentic flamenco show. The best places to watch this passionate dance are Casa Patas and Corral de la Pacheca, but you can also go to smaller clubs like Cardamomo, especially if the well-known flamenco clubs are full.

5. Enjoy a quiet stroll! Madrid’s parks and gardens are filled with romantic walks which you will undoubtedly enjoy. Parque del Buen Retiro is popular during the autumn, but you can go on a walk through the Rose Garden during other times of the year as well. Parque del Oeste is another romantic spot for couples during the summer, especially for those who want to stroll through the Rose Garden or enjoy a picnic for two. Finally, El Capricho is a lesser known place, ideal for those who want privacy and solitude. This famous garden is open for visitors only during the weekends and special holidays, making it more mysterious and alluring. Also, don’t hesitate to go to the Royal Botanical Garden. It might seem like a common place to go to, but it is so vast you won’t be bothered by noisy crowds of tourists.

6. Go to a spa! Hotel spas have their own couple packages, which are ideal for short breaks to Madrid, but if you have time, head off to the Medina Mayrit Arabic Baths. This spa offers special packages which include dinner, a Turkish bath, a massage, and a show. The show consists of traditional oriental dances which you can enjoy during your meal. Make sure you book ahead!

7. Take pictures! Templo de Debod is an ancient Egyptian temple located in the heart of Madrid. It is a popular place where couples and newlyweds pose for pictures, so why not join in on the fun and take some photos to remind you of Madrid?
