Los Gorditos, Vegan Mexican, Portland, Oregon

Burrito

Los Gorditos has three locations but I visited the downtown Portland location at 922 NW Davis St in the Pearl District. It’s near Portland’s famous, giant bookstore, Powell’s Books, and there is also a Wholefoods 5 minutes walk away (It has vegan cake if you’re looking for dessert).

They serve meat at Los Gorditos but they also have a separate vegan menu and use a separate grill to avoid cross contamination. You can eat in or take out. The restaurant itself is a nice, casual place to eat and has a clean bathroom.

I ate here about five times – each time I had the Soyrizo Burrito with Soy Chorizo as the vegan protein. The menu options all seem pretty similar as they have the same basic components.

Mine came with lettuce, a small amount of vegan sour cream, rice, a smear of refried beans, tomato, avocado and Cilantro. I asked them to hold the onion. It all tasted fresh and delicious. You can help yourself to sauces – which are smooth rather than a typical salsa bar with more chunky salsas.

Kathryn had her meat fix with a Super Stacy Burrito, and tacos on another occasion. She enjoyed them both but found the tacos especially tasty.

The prices range from around $7-10 before tip, which is a reasonable price. Check out their vegan, vegetarian and meat menus on their website.

Overall I’d rate this restaurant as very good. It’s pretty similar to what I make at home when I make Mexican food.

If you’re only in Portland for a couple of days you might be better to try some of the more unique offerings around town. But if you do find yourself hungry and near Los Gorditos, or you’re particularly craving Mexican food, then I think you’d be very happy with your meal here. It’s hearty good tasting food.

If you’re a budget traveler, this Los Gorditos branch is less than a 10 minute walk from the NW Hosteling International.
The other two Los Gorditos locations are a restaurant at 1212 SE Division St, and a food truck at 50th Ave and SE Division St on the NW corner.

  1. I remembered dining at Los Gorditos when they started out as a food truck. Man, their food was pretty good. Then they opened a restaurant. I’m not sure the food was the same anymore. But it’s not bad for vegan Mexican cuisine for tourists who are visiting PDX.
